Cavaliers’ wrap-up Non-Conference Play with Loss at Home in Week #3

Playing their third straight game to open the season against a higher division team, the Southern Lee Cavaliers went down at home to 8A Apex Friendship, 57-0 to wrap up 2026 non-conference play.

          After receiving the opening kickoff, the Cavs drive stalled and they were forced to punt. When the snap went over the head of Senior Punter Luke Waters, and into the end zone for a safety, the Patriots jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. The Patriots returned the ensuing punt back into Southern Lee territory to the 31-yard line, and two plays later added an 18-yard touchdown pass to make it 9-0, with 8:59 left in the first quarter.

          Southern Lee turnovers in the first half, including a blocked punt returned for a touchdown led to an eventual 44-0 Apex Friendship lead at the half. In that second quarter, Senior backup Quarterback Gavin Shaffer, already in for week one starter, Caleb Coro, went down with an injury and would not return. So, Coach Fred Blanks turned to Freshman Mauricio Angelo to take over the signal calling the rest of the way. Angelo came in and gave a little spark to the Cavalier offense before a blindside hit on Angelo resulted in another Southern Lee turnover that led to an Apex Friendship touchdown.

          The Cavaliers struggled to control the Patriot run game on the night giving up 232 yards on the ground. Southern Lee, however, did have their biggest night on the season through the air.

          Southern Lee (0-3) will have their bye next week, before returning home to open Carolina Pines 6A conference play on September 18^th, against Western Harnett (2-1).
